A new land-based activity – The Tree and the Senses

1 min
We tested a new activity designed for cycles 1 and 2 (ages 3 to 8): ‘The Tree and the Senses’. An activity created to spark curiosity, motor skills, and self‑confidence through the sensory exploration of trees.

Programme of the event

A story to discover trees

To begin, we told the story of a little bird searching for a shelter for the winter. Through this tale, the children learned to distinguish conifers (which keep their needles) from deciduous trees (which lose their leaves). After the story, it was time to head outdoors: the children set off to find the leaves mentioned in the tale!

The Leaf-Kim– A game to learn how to recognize

The children collected different leaves, then we identified and labeled them. Then it was time for the game:

  • We hide a leaf or its label.
  • With their eyes closed, the children must guess what has disappeared by using their memory and senses.
  • To go further, they explore a tree in detail: its bark, its branches, its leaves…

My Friend the Tree – A sensory partner activity.

In pairs, the children discovered a tree while blindfolded, guided by their partner. An activity that requires trust and cooperation to:

  • Touch the bark.
  • Smell the leaves.
  • Listen to the sounds around the tree. A magical moment to develop their senses and their connection to nature!

Creative sharing

To conclude the activity, each child:

  • Draw or glue a leaf from the tree they explored
  • Drew the entire tree and noted its characteristics (branches, trunk, roots, type of leaves…).

Summary

The children left with big smiles, new knowledge about trees, and a rich sensory experience. A great reminder that outdoor learning can be fun, hands‑on, and memorable!
