Ecomap workshop with Year 5 and 6 pupils from Langroix School

1 min
We challenged the pupils’ perception of their surroundings by creating tactile maps.

The workshop began with the participants marking their own location on a map, after which each pupil drew the key features of their surroundings: the river, the trees, the bakery, the car parks… Every map was unique, and that is the beauty of the Ecomap: there are no ‘wrong’ answers, only unique and meaningful interpretations.

Next, it was time for some fieldwork! Just a few minutes’ walk from the classroom, lush greenery stretches along the river. We were even lucky enough to spot a kingfisher! Back in the classroom, the maps came to life with all the sensations and discoveries we’d experienced during our exploration.

The maps are now complete, but the process of personal and collective reflection is just beginning. How can we better understand nature and the connections that bind us to it? And, above all, how can we preserve the biodiversity around us?
